The Belmont Athletics and Extra-Curricular Society is a registered non-profit organization that was established at Belmont Senior Secondary and received it’s Certification in 1986. The purpose of the Society as specified in it’s Constitution is as follows:

  • to be a support group of a non-political or religious character to raise money for and to assist with transportation, provision of equipment and other expenses of individual clubs and/or teams sponsored by Belmont Senior Secondary School.

  • to support and assist any and all extra-curricular activities sponsored by Belmont Senior Secondary School and any of the teachers employed within.

  • to do all things incidental or conducive to the attainment of the forgoing purposes.

The Society has a Board of Directors whose responsibility it is to ensure that the goals and objectives of the Society are met. The funds that the Society administer are received from the Gaming Policy & Enforcement Branch of the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General.. The expenditure of these funds is strictly regulated by the Terms and Conditions as directed by the afore mentioned Ministry. The monies can only be used to support extra-curricular activities. Non-compliance with these regulations could mean withdrawal of license and loss of funds. It is the Board’s responsibility to ensure that all Society expenditures fall within these regulations to ensure continued receipt of these funds. The Board works closely with the Administration, staff and PAC to optimize the use of these funds. The PAC has a member of it’s executive on the Board of the Society.

The distribution of funds to the various teams, clubs or programs within Belmont is dealt with on a request basis. At the beginning of the school year, a notice is given to all staff advising them that there may be funds available for their team, club or program and to submit their request at the beginning of the school year or as the need for funds arises. In the fiscal year 2004/2005, no request that met the required criteria was denied. There is a requirement of both the Society and the Gaming Branch that any team or club receiving funds must put in a reasonable effort to raise money on their own. There previously was a stipulation that gaming revenue must be spent within 12 months of receipt. If the monies couldn’t be spent within that time frame because of unforeseen circumstances, as was the case in 2003/2004, the Society works with all concerned to determine a project to deal with the surplus. The state-of-the- art audio-visual system and large screen monitors throughout the school came about as a result of this surplus. It has proven to be of tremendous benefit to the Administration, staff and students, particularly those with hearing impairment. That regulation has now been revised to allow 3 years for the monies to be spent. The Society will continue to work to ensure that all students involved in extra-curricular activities at Belmont continue to benefit from the funds received. Please e-mail the President of the Society, Lloyd Powell at if there are any questions.
